A Look Back in Time
How Penny Pot Got Its Name
Long ago, in 1686, people from England came to this area. They thought the land looked a lot like their home country. So, they decided to call their new settlement "Penny Pot."
The River and the Dam
A stream called the Hospitality Branch flows right into the Great Egg Harbor River near Penny Pot. A long time ago, a dam was built here. This dam was made from strong wooden pieces. These pieces were actually salvaged from a British ship! This ship had been taken by pirates during the Revolutionary War.
A Village Around a Tavern
Penny Pot used to be a small group of houses. These homes were built around a tavern, which was also named Penny Pot. A tavern was like an inn or a restaurant where people could eat, drink, and stay. In 1915, people described Penny Pot as "a settlement of other years." They noted that only one large house from that time was still standing.
