Pentahedron facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A pentahedron is a cool 3D shape in geometry that has exactly five flat sides, also called faces. Think of it like a solid object you can hold, but all its surfaces are flat polygons. The word "penta" means five, and "hedron" means face, so it literally means "five faces"!

A triangular prism is another example of a pentahedron.

What is a Polyhedron?

Before we dive deeper into pentahedra, let's quickly understand what a polyhedron is. A polyhedron is a solid 3D shape with flat faces, straight edges, and sharp corners (called vertices). Cubes, pyramids, and prisms are all examples of polyhedra. Pentahedra are just one specific kind of polyhedron, one that always has five faces.

Types of Pentahedra

There are different ways a pentahedron can be shaped, but two common types have faces made from regular polygons (meaning all sides and angles of the polygon are equal).

The Square Pyramid

One very common type of pentahedron is the square pyramid. You might have seen pictures of the famous pyramids in Egypt; they are shaped like this!

  • It has one square base.
  • It has four triangular faces that meet at a single point, called the apex.
  • In total, it has 5 faces (1 square + 4 triangles).
  • It also has 8 edges and 5 vertices (corners).

The Triangular Prism

Another type of pentahedron is the triangular prism. Imagine a triangular block or a slice of cheese shaped like a triangle; if it's long, it's probably a triangular prism!

  • It has two triangular faces that are parallel to each other.
  • It has three rectangular faces connecting the two triangles.
  • In total, it has 5 faces (2 triangles + 3 rectangles).
  • It also has 9 edges and 6 vertices.

Where Can We See Pentahedra?

Pentahedra shapes are all around us!

  • Pyramids: Besides the ancient pyramids, you might see square pyramid shapes in some tent designs or even in the tops of some buildings.
  • Prisms: Triangular prisms can be found in things like roof sections, some types of tents, or even in a slice of a Toblerone chocolate bar! Scientists also use glass triangular prisms to split light into different colors.
