A Long and Musical History

The orchestra began in 1897. It was first known as the Bradley Symphony Orchestra. This was part of Bradley University. Its first conductor was Harold Plowe.

In 1915, the group officially became the Peoria Symphony Orchestra. This made it the 14th oldest orchestra in the United States!

After Harold Plowe retired in 1927, many conductors led the orchestra. In 1978, William Wilsen became the Musical Director. He helped the orchestra become even better. He also took them on a special trip to Friedrichshafen, Germany. This city is Peoria's "sister city." Wilsen also led the celebration for the orchestra's 100th birthday!

David Commanday took over as Music Director in 1999. Under his leadership, the orchestra became very popular. People loved their creative and fun concerts. During his ten years, the orchestra's financial support also doubled.

George Stelluto became the music director in 2010. He continues to lead the orchestra today.

Where They Play and Who They Play With

The Peoria Symphony Orchestra performs at the Peoria Civic Center. This is a large and modern venue. Many famous solo musicians have played with the orchestra. These include amazing artists like Emanuel Ax (piano) and Yo-Yo Ma (cello). Other stars include Joshua Bell (violin) and Itzhak Perlman (violin). Evelyn Glennie (percussion), Hilary Hahn (violin), and Sharon Isbin (guitar) have also performed.
