Peppadew is a special brand of food from a South African company called Peppadew International. They are most famous for their tasty sweet piquanté peppers. These peppers are grown in the Limpopo area of South Africa. Peppadew also makes other foods like jalapeño peppers, pickled onions, and different sauces.
How Peppadew Started
The Peppadew company began in 1995. A person named Johan Steenkamp found a unique sweet pepper in the Eastern Cape part of South Africa. He thought this pepper was very special.
To protect this new type of pepper, Johan Steenkamp applied for special rights. These rights made sure that only his company could grow and sell this specific pepper.
Johan Steenkamp started growing and preparing the peppers in the Tzaneen area of South Africa. The main factory for Peppadew International is still located there today. In 2004, Johan Steenkamp sold his share in the company.
Peppadew International was the first company to sell this kind of pepper. Sometimes, people might say the pepper looks like a mix between a pepper and a tomato. This is just because they are similar in color and size to small tomatoes. But, they are still peppers!
How Peppadew Peppers Are Made
Making Peppadew peppers starts with carefully chosen seeds. These seeds are grown into small plants, called seedlings, for about six to eight weeks.
After they grow a bit, these young plants are given to special farmers. These farmers work with Peppadew International's farming experts. They make sure the peppers grow well.
Once the peppers are ready, they are picked by hand. Then, they are sent to the Peppadew International factory. At the factory, the peppers have their seeds removed. They are then treated and put into jars with a special liquid called brine. This brine gives them their unique pickled flavor.
