Robert Ernest Sharpe (born December 9, 1918 – died December 4, 1997) was a talented American baseball player. People knew him by his nickname, "Pepper". He was a pitcher in the Negro leagues during the 1940s.

Meet Pepper Sharpe

Pepper Sharpe was born in Rena Lara, Mississippi. He was the oldest of 12 children in his family. He grew up to become a professional baseball player.

His Baseball Career

Pepper Sharpe played for two main teams. He pitched for the Memphis Red Sox and the Chicago American Giants. Both teams were part of the Negro leagues. These leagues were where African American players could play baseball professionally before the major leagues were fully integrated.

One of his most exciting moments was pitching a "no-hitter." This means he played an entire game without any opposing player getting a hit. He achieved this amazing feat against the Kansas City Monarchs, a very famous team.

Life Beyond the Field

Sharpe also served his country. He was in the U.S. Army during 1945 and 1946. After his time in the military, he continued his baseball career.

In 1994, the city of San Diego, California honored him. They declared July 24 as "Robert 'Pepper' Sharpe Day." This special day celebrated his achievements and contributions.

Pepper Sharpe passed away in San Diego in 1997. He was 78 years old.
