Peppy San (born 1959, died 1989) was a famous Quarter Horse stallion. He was known for his amazing skills in a sport called cutting. Peppy San made history by being the first horse to win the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) World Championship and then have one of his own children also become an NCHA World Champion.
Life Story
Peppy San was born in 1959. He was a sorrel stallion, meaning he had a reddish-brown coat. His father was a horse named Leo San, and his mother was Peppy Belle.
His father, Leo San, was a son of a very famous horse named Leo. Peppy San's mother, Peppy Belle, came from a horse named Pep-Up. Pep-Up was bred by the famous King Ranch. Peppy San's grandmother on his mother's side was a mare named Belle Burnett from the 6666 Ranch.
Cutting Champion
Peppy San was an incredible cutting horse. He worked with his rider, Matlock Rose, for many years. In cutting, a horse and rider work together to separate a single cow from a herd. It takes a lot of skill and quick movements!
Peppy San earned a lot of money in cutting contests, winning over $49,000. He received special awards from the NCHA, including their Certificate of Ability, Bronze, and Silver awards. He was also honored by being added to the NCHA Hall of Fame.
In 1967, Peppy San became the NCHA World Champion Cutting Horse. He was also the Reserve Champion (second place) in the 1962 NCHA Cutting Futurity. The American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) also recognized his talent. He was named the 1967 High Point Cutting Stallion. He also earned titles like AQHA Champion and Superior Cutting Horse.
Peppy San lived a long life. He passed away peacefully on April 26, 1989, due to old age.

- San Tip
- Peppy's Desire
His son, Peponita, was especially famous. Peponita was inducted into the NCHA Hall of Fame, just like his father. Peponita also won the NCHA World Champion Cutting Horse title twice, in 1977 and 1979!
Three of Peppy San's other children won the NCHA Cutting Derby. These horses were Chunky's Monkey, Tip It San, and Peppy Lena San.
