Maurice Gallaga (born August 25, 1943 – died May 7, 2020), known to many as Peque Gallaga, was a very famous Filipino film director. He won many awards for his movies. His most well-known film was Oro, Plata, Mata. He directed this movie after winning a scriptwriting contest. He also received awards from international film festivals, like one in Belgium in 1983.

Education and Early Life
Peque Gallaga spent his elementary and high school years in City of Manila. He studied at De La Salle University. Later, he earned his bachelor's degree in commerce and liberal arts. This was at the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental Province. After finishing his studies, he taught theater and film at the University of St. La Salle.
Filmmaking Career
Becoming a Well-Known Director
When Peque Gallaga moved back to Manila, he started working on TV musicals. Soon after, he began directing movies. He co-directed his first film, Binhi, with Butch Perez. He also directed other popular movies like Virgin Forest, Scorpio Nights, and Unfaithful Wife. He even directed a part of the horror movie Shake, Rattle & Roll, called the "Manananggal" segment.
In 1986, he started working with Lore Reyes. They directed many films together. Some of their joint works include Shake, Rattle & Roll II, Shake, Rattle & Roll III, and Shake, Rattle & Roll IV. They also directed Baby Love and more than twenty other movies. Peque Gallaga even lent his voice to the animated movie Dayo. He played the character "Lolo Nano," who was a wise old man.
Awards for Production Design
Peque Gallaga was not only a director but also a talented production designer. In 1976, he and Laida Lim-Pérez won an award for Best Production Design. This was for Eddie Romero's movie Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?. They received this award at the first Gawad Urian awards.
In 1980, he won the same award again. This time, it was for Ishmael Bernal's film City After Dark.
Working on Film Classification
During the 1980s, Peque Gallaga was a member of the Film Academy Classification Board (FACB). This board helped to classify movies.
Directing Magic Temple
In 1996, Gallaga and Lore Reyes won big awards for their movie Magic Temple. They won Best Director and Best Screenplay at the 1996 Metro Manila Film Festival. This showed how talented they were in both directing and writing stories for films.
Later Works
In 2009, Peque Gallaga directed the movie Agaton & Mindy, which was shown in theaters.
In 2013, he released several films. These included Sonata and a documentary called Botong Francisco: A Nation Imagined. He was also interviewed in a documentary called The Search for Weng Weng that same year.
His last movie collaboration with Lore Reyes was T'yanak, which was released in 2014.
Personal Life
Peque Gallaga lived in Bacolod with his wife, Madie. They were married for 52 years. They had five children together: Gines, Michelle, Datu, Jubal, and Wanggo.
Death
Peque Gallaga was admitted to a hospital in Bacolod City on May 5, 2020. He had health problems. Two days later, on May 7, he passed away in the hospital due to heart and lung issues. He was cremated, as he and his family wished.
