A charming street in Peratallada

Peratallada (which means 'carved stone' in Catalan) is a small, beautiful town in Catalonia, Spain. It's part of the Forallac area, located about 22 kilometers (14 miles) east of the city of Girona.

This town is famous for its amazing old buildings, which are mostly made from stone. This stone was actually carved out of the large ditch, or moat, that still goes around parts of the town. Peratallada is like stepping back in time, with its narrow, winding streets and ancient feel.

Exploring Peratallada

Peratallada is known as a "historic-artistic monument." This means it's a very special place with a rich history and beautiful architecture that is protected.

The Castle of Peratallada

The most important building in the center of town is the Castle of Peratallada. This castle has been around for a very long time, with records showing it existed as early as the year 1065. Imagine how many stories those old walls could tell! In the 1960s, the castle was carefully fixed up and turned into a fancy hotel. During this work, people found signs that the area was settled even earlier, way back in the Bronze Age!

Sant Esteve Church

Just outside the town's old walls, you'll find a church called Sant Esteve (which means Saint Stephen). This church was built in the 1200s and is a great example of Romanesque architecture, a style of building popular in Europe during the Middle Ages.

What to See Today

Today, Peratallada is a popular place for visitors. People love to walk through its old stone streets and see the unique buildings. Because it's close to the lovely beaches of the Costa Brava, many tourists visit. The town also has many nice restaurants, small hotels, and art galleries where you can see local artwork.

Did you know? Part of the 1991 movie Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves was filmed right here in Peratallada!
