Percy Wentworth Hope-Johnstone was a British Army officer who lived from 1909 to 1983. He was also considered the 10th Earl of Annandale and Hartfell, a noble title.
Life and Military Service
Percy Hope-Johnstone was born on January 2, 1909. His parents were Evelyn Wentworth Hope-Johnstone and Eileen Briscoe.
He went to Sherborne School and then to the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. This college is where many British Army officers are trained. After his training, he joined the 16th/5th Lancers, a part of the British Army. He started as a Lieutenant.
Later, he served with the 155th (Lanarkshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment, which was part of the Royal Artillery. Here, he was promoted to the rank of Major.
During the Second World War, Percy Hope-Johnstone fought in the Malayan campaign. This was a series of battles in Southeast Asia. He was captured by the Japanese forces in the Far East. He then became a prisoner of war and was held by the Japanese.
After his father passed away, Percy became the Chief of Clan Johnstone. He also took on the roles of Hereditary Steward of Annandale and Hereditary Keeper of Lochmaben Palace. He also inherited the title of Lord Johnstone and the Earl of Annandale and Hartfell. However, he never officially claimed the Earl title.
Family Life
Percy Hope-Johnstone was married twice. His first marriage was to Phyllis Athena MacDonell on July 7, 1932. They did not have any children and later divorced in 1939.
On July 26, 1940, he married Margaret Jane Hunter-Arundell. She was born in 1910 and passed away in 1998. Percy and Margaret had two children together:
- Patrick Andrew Wentworth, who was born on April 19, 1941. He later became the 11th Earl of Annandale and Hartfell.
- Lady Eileen Elizabeth, who was born on October 3, 1948.
