Peretz Square is a small public park in New York City. It is located in an area called Lower Manhattan. This park is special because it sits where three streets meet: Houston Street, First Avenue, and First Street.
What is Peretz Square?
Peretz Square is a public space where people can relax. It's a small park that helps connect different parts of the city. The square is important because it shows where two different city plans meet.
One plan is the older, smaller street layout of the Lower East Side. The other is the much larger, more organized street grid from the Commissioners' Plan of 1811. This plan helped shape most of Manhattan's streets.
Why is it called Peretz Square?
The area around Peretz Square was once home to many Jewish immigrants. They moved there in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The park was named after a famous writer from Poland.
His name was Isaac Leib Peretz (1852-1915). He wrote plays and stories in the Yiddish language. The square was officially named and opened on November 23, 1952.
