Pericallis is a group of beautiful flowering plants. There are about 15 different kinds, or species, in this group. You can find them growing naturally on islands like the Canary Islands, Madeira, and Azores. These islands are in the Atlantic Ocean.
Some Pericallis plants are like small herbaceous plants. This means they have soft stems, not woody ones. Others are small subshrubs, which are a bit woody at the bottom. They all belong to the Asteraceae family. This family is also known as the daisy or sunflower family.
In the past, scientists sometimes put Pericallis plants into other groups. These groups were called Cineraria or Senecio. But now, Pericallis is its own special group.
A very popular type is the florist's cineraria. Its scientific name is Pericallis × hybrida. This plant is a hybrid. This means it was made by crossing two different Pericallis species. These parent plants were P. cruenta and P. lanata.
