Peride Celal Yönsel (born June 10, 1916 – died June 15, 2013) was a famous Turkish writer. She wrote many novels and short stories. People often knew her as Peride Celal. Her books won important awards, like the Sedat Simavi Literature Award and the Orhan Kemal Novel Prize.

Early Life of Peride Celal

Peride Celal was born in Istanbul, a big city in Turkey. She went to high school in Samsun and later at a French school in Istanbul called Lycée Sainte-Pulchérie. She spent most of her childhood in a region of Turkey called Anatolia.

Peride Celal's Career as a Writer

After finishing school, Peride Celal returned to Istanbul. She worked at an electricity company and a publishing office. In 1944, she moved to Switzerland. There, she worked at the Turkish Embassy in Bern. When she came back to Turkey, she worked for a government press agency. She also wrote for a newspaper called Yeni İstanbul.

Peride Celal loved reading and writing because her mother was also very interested in books. She started writing at a young age. Her very first story, Ak Kiz, was published in a magazine called Yedigün in 1935. After that, her stories and novels appeared in many newspapers. These included Son Posta, Cumhuriyet, Tan, and Milliyet.

Her writing career can be seen in two main parts. At first, she mostly wrote romantic novels. Later, she started writing about the complicated lives of wealthy people in Turkey.

Later Life and Passing

Peride Celal passed away on June 15, 2013. Her family announced her death two days later. She had a daughter named Zeynep Ergun. Zeynep later became the head of the English Language and Literature Department at Istanbul University.

Awards and Recognition

Peride Celal received many honors for her writing. In 1977, she won the Turkish Sedat Simavi Literature Award. She received this award for her novel Üç Yirmi Dört Saat. She shared the award with another writer, Fazıl Hüsnü Dağlarca.

In 1991, Peride Celal was given the Orhan Kemal Novel Prize. This award was for her novel called Kurtlar.

In 1996, a book was published in her honor. It was called Present to Peride Celal. This book was put together by 19 different Turkish authors.
