History of Perkinstown
Early Days and Logging
People started cutting down trees, known as logging, in the Perkinstown area around the 1860s. This was an important industry for the region. The first families to settle and build homes here, called homesteaders, arrived in 1882.
The Tannery and Its Impact
In 1892, a company called Shaws opened a factory that made leather, which is called a tannery, in Perkinstown. They used bark from hemlock trees found in the nearby forests to help make the leather. For a while, the factory put its leftover waste into Lake Kathryn. This practice is not good for the environment. The leather factory closed down in 1900.
Community Life and Development
By 1893, Perkinstown had six saloons, which were places where people gathered. In 1933, a special camp called the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) opened near Perkinstown. The CCC was a program that helped young men find work during the Great Depression. They helped build the Winter Sports Area and worked on other important projects in the community.
