Pero Niño (1378–1453) was a brave and skilled sailor from Castile. He was a "privateer," which means he was a ship captain who was allowed by his king to attack enemy ships and towns. He worked for King Henry III and later for King John II. Pero Niño sailed in the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean in the early 1400s.

Pero Niño was born in 1378. He first gained fame fighting in the Siege of Gijón in 1394. This was a big battle where he showed his courage.

After that, he took part in a war between Castile and Portugal. This war lasted from 1396 to 1399. Pero Niño was an important leader during these naval battles.

Mediterranean and Atlantic Expeditions

In 1404 and 1405, Pero Niño led a naval trip across the Mediterranean Sea. During this journey, his fleet even managed to attack the city of Tunis. This showed how far his ships could travel and how daring he was.

Later, in 1405 and 1406, he led another big campaign. This time, he sailed into the Atlantic Ocean. He raided English settlements near Bordeaux in Guyenne. He also attacked places like Jersey and Poole Harbour. These attacks were important for Castile during its conflicts with England.

Fighting in Granada

Pero Niño also fought on land. He joined a military campaign against the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada. This was a kingdom in southern Spain. He fought for Ferdinand, who was the regent of Castile at the time. Ferdinand was the brother of King Henry III. Pero Niño took part in battles in places like Ronda and Setenil.

Later Life and Legacy

Pero Niño passed away on January 17, 1453.

A book about his life was written by Gutierre Díaz de Games. This book is called El Victorial. It was written between 1435 and 1448. It tells many stories about Pero Niño's adventures and achievements.
