History of Perowne Barracks
Early Days and Naming
Perowne Barracks started as Tai Lam Military Camp in 1931. Later, it was renamed Perowne Barracks. This was to honor Major General Lancelot Perowne. He was a leader of the Brigade of Gurkhas, a famous group of soldiers. The Gurkhas were stationed at this base.
Closing and New Uses
The barracks closed in 1994. This happened before Hong Kong was returned to China in 1997. After closing, the buildings were used for different things. In the 1990s, students from Lingnan College lived there. It also became a training school for the Immigration Department. More recently, a charity called Crossroads Foundation has used the site.
Trailwalker Event
Perowne Barracks was also famous for the annual Trailwalker event. This event is a long walk along the MacLehose Trail. Until 2008, the barracks was the final checkpoint and finish line. In 2009, the finish line moved to Tai Tong. However, this change was only for a short time.
Part of the barracks was later taken down. A new campus for Chu Hai College of Higher Education was built there. In 2019, Perowne Barracks became the finish line for Trailwalker again.
