Perry Hall Park, also known as Perry Hall Country Park, is a large and popular park in Perry Barr, Birmingham, England. It was once called Perry Hall Playing Fields. This park is very important because it's protected by a group called Fields in Trust. This means it will always be a public space for everyone to enjoy, now and for many years to come.

The Story of Perry Hall

The park you see today was once home to a grand building called Perry Hall. This hall belonged to the Gough-Calthorpe family. Sadly, Perry Hall was taken down in 1927. The city council had to choose between saving Perry Hall or another important building nearby, Aston Hall, because of money. They decided to save Aston Hall.

Even though the hall is gone, you can still see parts of its history. The old moat, a water-filled ditch that once surrounded the hall for protection, is still there.

The River Tame and Flood Protection

The River Tame flows right through the middle of Perry Hall Park. It generally moves from the north-west to the south-east.

In the 1980s, some important work was done in the park to help with flooding. The land south-west of the river was lowered. Special flood protection measures were also put in place. Now, when the river gets too full, the extra water flows onto the sports fields. It stays there safely until it can be slowly released back into the river. This area is like a special reservoir called the Perry Hall Playing Fields Flood Detention Reservoir. It can hold a lot of water!

In 2005, the river was changed again. This time, the goal was to slow down the water flow and create better homes for wildlife. This project helped both people and nature.

From July 2nd to 8th, 1913, Perry Hall Park hosted a very exciting event: the Imperial Scout Exhibition, Rally and Sea Scout Display. This was the first big international Scout gathering in Birmingham. About 30,000 Scouts from all over the world came to the park for this huge rally! Imagine how many tents and campfires there must have been!

What You Can Do at the Park

Perry Hall Park is a busy place with lots to offer!

  • Sports Pitches: The park has many football and cricket pitches. The Birmingham Parks Cricket League uses them often.
  • Railway Line: The park is next to the railway line that connects Birmingham and Walsall. You can easily get to the park using nearby Perry Barr railway station or Hamstead railway station.
  • Parkrun: Every Saturday morning at 9:00 AM, a 5-kilometre parkrun takes place in the park. It's a fun way to get active!
