Early Travel Routes
In 1806, an important road was built through this area. It was called the New Jersey Turnpike. This road was used by stagecoaches, which were like early buses. They carried people and goods between Easton, Pennsylvania and New Brunswick, New Jersey.
How Perryville Got Its Name
The community of Perryville started to grow around a building called the Perryville Tavern. This tavern was built in 1813. It was named after a famous naval hero, Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry. He was known for his big victory in the Battle of Lake Erie that same year.
