The Perryville Tavern, also called the Perryville Inn, is a historic building located at 167 Perryville Road in Perryville. This old building is part of Union Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 15, 1977. This means it's a special place because of its unique building style and its past as a business. The tavern is found west of Clinton. It is also south of where Interstate 78 and Perryville Road meet.

The Story of Perryville Tavern

Building a New Inn in 1813

The Perryville Tavern was built in 1813. A man named Cornelius Carhart built it. It was placed on a busy road called the New Jersey Turnpike. This road was built in 1806. It was a main route for stage coaches traveling between Easton, Pennsylvania and New Brunswick, New Jersey.

How the Tavern Got Its Name

The tavern was named after a famous naval hero, Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry. He was known for his big victory at the Battle of Lake Erie. This important battle happened on September 10, 1813. The tavern was named to honor his success.

Changes Over the Years

Around 1900, the Perryville Tavern stopped being a public inn. It became a private home instead. Later, in 1957, plans for a new highway, Interstate 78, meant the building was in the way. The state bought the tavern. In January 1960, it was moved about 1000 feet south to its current spot. After the move, it opened again, but this time as a restaurant.

What the Perryville Tavern Looks Like

Federal Style Architecture

The Perryville Tavern is a brick building with two and a half stories. It is built in the Federal architecture style. This style was popular in the United States from about 1780 to 1830. It often features simple, balanced designs. The tavern is special because this style is quite rare in Hunterdon County.

A Unique Tavern Sign

A local artist named William Bonnell might have painted a special sign for the inn. This sign had a portrait of Andrew Jackson on one side. Andrew Jackson later became the seventh President of the United States. On the other side of the sign, there was an American flag.
