Perryville station is a train stop located in Perryville, Maryland. It's an important part of the busy Northeast Corridor, a major railway line. This station is the last stop on the MARC Penn Line, a train service that helps people travel around Maryland.
The station has one platform, which is a raised area next to the tracks where people get on and off trains. This platform serves the northern track of the four tracks that make up the Northeast Corridor. Inside the station building, you'll find the Perryville Railroad Museum. This museum has cool things like a model train setup and displays about the history of trains in Perryville.
In 2023, there was an exciting agreement made. The Maryland Transit Administration and Delaware Transit Corporation decided to extend the MARC train service. This means MARC trains will soon go from Perryville all the way to Newark, Delaware. There, passengers will be able to connect with another train service called SEPTA Regional Rail.
History of Perryville Station
The Perryville station was first built in 1905 by the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad. Later, the Pennsylvania Railroad took it over. The station is located near a special track setup called a "wye," which is where train tracks split off in different directions.
When Amtrak started running passenger train services in 1971, the Perryville station was closed for a while. However, it became a stop again for a train called the Chesapeake, which ran from 1978 to 1983.
On May 1, 1991, the MARC Penn Line train service was extended to Perryville. This meant more trains were stopping there. The station was also fixed up that year, costing about $1 million to make it look good again.
By September 2001, one southbound Amtrak Northeast Regional train also started stopping at Perryville. This stop was only for MARC passengers and wasn't listed on Amtrak's public schedules. However, Amtrak service at Perryville was temporarily stopped in March 2020. This happened because Amtrak reduced its services due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
