The persistent trillium (scientific name: Trillium persistens) is a special type of flowering plant found in North America. It belongs to the Trillium genus, which is part of the Melanthiaceae family. People also call this plant the persistent wakerobin. It's an important plant because it is considered endangered, meaning it's at risk of disappearing forever.

Meet the Persistent Trillium

The persistent trillium is a type of plant that grows back year after year. It can reach a height of about 20 to 30 centimeters (that's about 8 to 12 inches). Each plant has three large leaves that grow in a circle near the top of its stem, just below the flower. These leaves are shaped like wide spearheads, usually 3 to 9 centimeters long and 1.5 to 3.5 centimeters wide.

The plant's pretty white flower also has three petals. Each petal is about 2 to 3.5 centimeters long and 0.5 to 1 centimeter wide. It's a beautiful sight when it blooms!

Where Does It Live?

This unique plant has a very small home range. You can only find the persistent trillium in certain parts of the United States. Specifically, it grows in northeastern Georgia and northwestern South Carolina. Because it lives in such a small area and faces threats, it is listed as an endangered species. This means scientists and conservationists are working hard to protect it and its habitat.
