Perthshire is a small, quiet community in Bolivar County, Mississippi, in the United States. It's not a city or a town with its own government, but rather an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and businesses that are part of the larger county. Perthshire is located right along Mississippi Highway 1.
About Perthshire
Perthshire is found about 5 miles (8 km) south of a place called Deeson. It's also about 3 miles (5 km) north of Gunnison. This community is situated along the Riverside Division of what used to be the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad.
What is an Unincorporated Community?
An unincorporated community is a place where people live that doesn't have its own local government. It's not officially a city or a town. Instead, it's governed by the larger county it's in, which in this case is Bolivar County.
Perthshire's Past
Long ago, Perthshire was a busy little spot. It was once home to six general stores. A general store is like a small shop that sells all sorts of things, from food to tools to clothing. They were very important before big supermarkets existed.
A post office also served the Perthshire community for many years. It opened in 1889 and helped people send and receive letters and packages until it closed in 1963.
