Peter (usurper) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Peter (also known as Petrus) was a person who tried to take power in the early 500s AD. He was a "usurper," which means he tried to become a ruler without being chosen or having the right to. Peter tried to take control from the Visigothic rulers in Spain.

His story is found in two old writings: the Consularia Caesaraugustana and the Victoris Tunnunnensis Chronicon. These are not very well-known sources.

Peter's Attempt to Rule

Peter tried to claim power in the Ebro valley area of Spain. This happened after the Western Roman Empire had already fallen. He was the second Roman governor known to try and become an emperor in this region. The first was a person named Burdunellus.

Capture and End

In the year 506 AD, the Visigoths captured the city of Dertosa. Peter was arrested there. He was then executed, which means he was put to death. As a sign of their victory, his head was sent to Saragossa. We don't know much else about Peter's life or his rule.
