Peter Allibond (born 1560 – died 6 March 1629) was an English translator. He translated religious books from French and Latin into English.

Peter Allibond was the father of Dr John Allibond. Peter was born in 1560 in a village called Wardington, which is near Banbury. His family had lived in Wardington for many generations.

His Early Life and Education

In 1578, Peter Allibond started studying at Magdalen Hall, which is part of Oxford University. He worked hard and earned his first university degree (a bachelor's degree) in 1581. A few years later, in 1585, he earned his master's degree.

After finishing his studies, Peter Allibond spent some years traveling in other countries. When he returned, he became a priest.

His Work as a Priest and Writer

Peter Allibond later became the rector (a type of church leader) of a church in Chenies, Buckinghamshire. He stayed there for many years. A historian named Anthony à Wood said that Peter Allibond "did much improve the ignorant with his sound doctrine." This means he taught people well with his clear religious teachings.

It was during his time as rector that Peter Allibond started his important writing work. He focused on translating books.

His Main Translation Work

In 1591, Peter Allibond published a book he had translated. The original book was written by John de l'Espine. Peter Allibond gave his translation a very long title: Comfort for an Afflicted Conscience, wherein is contained both Consolation and Instruction for the Sicke, against the fearfull apprehension of their sinnes, of death and the devill, of the curse of the law, and of the anger and iust iudgment of God.

This book was meant to offer comfort and guidance to people who were worried or feeling sad about their actions, death, or God's judgment. It was a religious book designed to help people feel better.

His Family and Later Life

Peter Allibond passed away on 6 March 1629. He was buried in the main part of his church in Chenies.

Anthony à Wood, the historian, described Peter Allibond as "an ingenious man." This means he was considered very clever and talented by everyone who knew him.

Peter Allibond had three sons. His youngest son, named Job, later decided to join the Catholic Church.
