Peter C. Harvey is a skilled lawyer who made history. He was the first African American to become the New Jersey Attorney General. The Attorney General is like the state's top lawyer and law enforcement officer.
New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey first chose Mr. Harvey for the role on February 15, 2003. The New Jersey Senate then officially approved him on June 16, 2003. He served as Attorney General until 2006. After leaving this important job, he joined a big law firm in New York City called Patterson, Belknap, Webb, and Tyler.
Mr. Harvey also helps the National Football League (NFL). He advises them on important decisions, making sure things are fair.

Early Career Steps
Before becoming the state's top lawyer, Peter Harvey held another key position. In 2002, the Attorney General at the time, David Samson, appointed him. Mr. Harvey became the First Assistant Attorney General and led the Division of Criminal Justice. This role involved overseeing many important legal cases.

Peter Harvey worked hard in school to become a lawyer.
