Peter Barry Brontë Gatenby (born in 1923, passed away on August 24, 2015, in Sandycove, County Dublin) was an important Irish medical doctor. He served as the Medical Director for the United Nations and was a Professor of Medicine at Trinity College Dublin. He made history as Ireland's very first full-time professor specializing in clinical medicine.

Peter Gatenby was the son of a well-known zoologist named James Brontë Gatenby. He was also connected to the famous Brontë family, who wrote many classic books. Peter Gatenby had a wife named Yvette. Together, they had two children, Robin and Odette, and six grandchildren.

What Was Peter Gatenby's Career Like?

Peter Gatenby earned his medical degree from Trinity College in 1946. After finishing his studies, he worked in several hospitals in Ireland and the United Kingdom. From 1953 to 1974, he was a special doctor, called a consultant physician, at Dr Steevens' Hospital.

In 1960, he became the first person to hold a full-time position as a professor of clinical medicine at Trinity College Dublin. He became a fellow of the college in 1965. Later, in 1974, he also took on a big role as the Medical Director for the United Nations.

From 1975 to 1978, he held another important title: Regius Professor of Physic. When he stepped down from this role in 1978, he was made an honorary fellow. He continued his work with the United Nations until he retired in 1987. To honor his contributions, the Peter Gatenby Award was created at Trinity College Dublin in 2002.
