Sandycove (which means Cuas an Ghainimh in Irish) is a lovely suburb located in Dublin, Ireland. It's found southeast of Dún Laoghaire and Glasthule, and northwest of Dalkey.

Sandycove is a popular place to visit by the sea. It's famous for its swimming spot called the Forty Foot. This area used to be only for men, but now everyone can swim there. Sandycove is also special because it's mentioned right at the beginning of a very famous book called Ulysses by James Joyce.

History of Sandycove

During World War II, on December 20, 1940, the Luftwaffe (Germany's air force) bombed the railway station in Sandycove. This happened even though Ireland was a neutral country, meaning it wasn't taking sides in the war. Three people were hurt in the bombing.

Getting Around Sandycove

The Sandycove and Glasthule railway station first opened on October 11, 1855. Sandycove also has bus services, with Dublin Bus numbers 59 and 111. It's also very close to the Dún Laoghaire harbour.

Culture and Arts

The famous writer James Joyce once lived for a short time in the Martello Tower in Sandycove. This tower is right next to the Forty Foot swimming spot. The very first part of Joyce's famous book, Ulysses, takes place in this tower. Today, the tower is a small museum dedicated to James Joyce and is open all year.

Every year on June 16, people celebrate Bloomsday in Sandycove. This day honors James Joyce and his book Ulysses.

Near the Martello Tower, right by the sea, there's a unique house. It was designed in a modern style by Michael Scott, a well-known architect from the 20th century. He even lived in this special house himself.

A song called "Sandy Cove" was written by the composer and singer Jimmy Webb. It's on his 1993 album Suspending Disbelief. In the song, the singer thinks about his life and how we all get older as he visits the area and the famous Martello Tower.

The singer-songwriter Luka Bloom thanked "Sandcove Cycles" in the notes for his 1992 album, The Acoustic Motorbike. They helped keep his bicycle, which the album is named after, in good shape.

Lifeboat Station

Sandycove was home to the very first lifeboat station in all of Ireland, set up in 1803. A lifeboat is a special boat used to rescue people from danger at sea.

On December 28, 1821, the Sandycove lifeboat crew rescued sailors from a ship called the Ellen of Liverpool. Sadly, four of the brave volunteer lifeboatmen drowned during this rescue.
