Peter Greene (October 1895 – 21 December 1963) was an important leader who served as the Mayor of Galway from 1954 to 1960. He helped shape the city during his time in office.

Early Life and Public Service

Peter Greene was born in October 1895. His family lived at the Fishmarket Pub, located near the famous Spanish Arch in Galway. His father, Coleman Greene, came from Carna, and his mother, Julia McGrath, was from Newcastle.

From 1917 to 1926, Peter Greene was involved with the Old Irish Republican Army. After this, he joined a political party called Fianna Fáil. In 1927, he got married and later had three children. He began his public service career in 1934. He represented the East Ward on the Urban Council, which is like a local government group that helps run the city.

Time as Mayor of Galway

Peter Greene became the Mayor of Galway in 1954. He held this important position until 1960. During his time as mayor, he helped start several new things for the city.

Launching the Galway Oyster Festival

One of his notable actions was opening the very first Galway Oyster Festival. This popular event began in September 1954. It celebrates Galway's famous oysters and has become a big part of the city's culture and tourism.

Responding to the KLM Flight Disaster

Mayor Greene was also in office during a sad event in August 1958. This was the KLM Flight 607-E plane crash. Sadly, there were no survivors from this accident. Only thirty-four bodies were found. Mayor Greene and the people of Galway worked hard to help during this difficult time.

International Recognition

In 1960, Queen Juliana of the Netherlands recognized Mayor Greene's efforts. She awarded him the Insignia of the Order of Orange-Nassau. This special award showed thanks for the help and support given by the Mayor and the people of Galway after the plane crash. The Dutch Ambassador formally presented the award to Mayor Greene at the Great Southern Hotel in Galway.
