Peter Haggett was born on January 24, 1933. His hometown was Pawlett, a small village in Somerset, England. As a child, he loved exploring his local area. He often walked and cycled around the countryside. These adventures helped him develop a strong interest in geography.

He went to Dr Morgan's Grammar School in Bridgwater. In 1951, he started studying geography at St. Catharine's College, Cambridge, part of the University of Cambridge. He was a very good student. He graduated in 1954 with top honors.

A Career in Geography

Peter Haggett had a long career in academics, lasting for 50 years. He made important contributions to human geography. This field studies how humans interact with their environment. He wrote or edited over 30 books about geography. These books covered different topics, from how geography is practiced to specific research areas.

He taught at many universities around the world. However, he is most famous for his time at the University of Bristol. He started there as a lecturer in 1966. He later became a professor of geography.

Awards and Recognition

Peter Haggett received many awards for his work. In 1991, he won the French Lauréat Prix International de Géographie Vautrin Lud. This is a very important award in geography. In 1993, he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). This honor was given to him for his great work in urban and regional geography.

Studying Diseases

Later in his career, Peter Haggett focused on a special area of geography. He studied epidemiology. This is the study of how diseases spread. He looked at where infectious diseases appear and how they move. He explored the connections between places and the spread of illnesses.
