Peter Hampton's Football Journey
Peter Hampton was born in Oldham, England. When he was ten years old, his family moved to Bishop Auckland. He almost joined Manchester City as a young player.
Starting at Leeds United
In September 1971, Peter joined Leeds United. He had already played for England Schools, showing his talent early on. He made his first professional appearance at the end of the 1972–73 season. However, it was tough for him to get a regular spot in the team. This was because other strong players like Terry Cooper, Trevor Cherry, and Frank Gray were playing in his position.
For the next three seasons, Peter mostly played in the reserve team. He didn't make many appearances for the main team. He was an unused substitute in the 1975 European Cup Final, which is a very important match. He finally got to play more often in the 1976–77 season, playing in 36 matches. But he couldn't keep his place in the team.
Moving to Stoke City
In August 1980, Peter joined Stoke City for £175,000. This was a big move for him. At Stoke, under manager Alan Durban, he finally got to play regularly. He played in many matches each season: 37 in 1980–81, 36 in 1981–82, 45 in 1982–83, and 38 in 1983–84. He spent four seasons at Stoke City, playing a total of 156 games.
Time at Burnley and Other Clubs
After his time at Stoke, manager Bill Asprey sold Peter to Burnley. Burnley was in the Third Division at the time. His first season there ended with the team being moved down to the Fourth Division. He played for Burnley for two more seasons in the lower league. After that, he had short periods playing for Rochdale and Carlisle United.
Life After Playing Football
After his playing career, Peter Hampton continued to be involved in football. He worked as a physiotherapist for Carlisle United for eleven years. A physiotherapist helps players recover from injuries.
Later, from 1998 to 2001, he became the manager of Workington, a non-league football club.
Other Work and Family
After leaving Workington in 2001, Peter opened his own private physiotherapy business. He also worked with Carlisle United's youth team, helping young players develop their skills. For a while, he also worked as a sales executive for a company that made sportswear.
Peter Hampton passed away on September 25, 2020, at the age of 66. He was on a family holiday in Cyprus. He had recently retired from working at Cumberland Infirmary.
His grandson, Joe White, has also become a footballer, continuing the family's connection to the sport.
