Peter Kaiser (born in 1987) is an American dog musher. He became famous for winning the 2019 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Peter is the first musher from the Yup’ik people and the fifth Alaska Native person to win this big race. He grew up in Bethel, Alaska.
Peter finished high school in Bethel in 2005. Besides mushing, he works in construction. He also enjoys fishing and hunting. Peter is married and has two children.
Peter Kaiser's Dog Mushing Career
Peter Kaiser started his Iditarod journey in 2010. In his first race, he finished 28th. He quickly improved, placing eighth in 2011 and fifth in 2012. His biggest win came in 2019 when he won the entire Iditarod race! In 2023, he finished second. Overall, Peter has finished in the top ten in 8 out of the 13 Iditarod races he has completed.
Peter has also won the Kuskokwim 300 race many times. This is a very respected mid-distance dog sled race. Watching the Kuskokwim 300 race each January helped him decide to become a professional musher. He said that his family always had dogs, and he had been mushing since he was a kid. This race made him want to try long-distance racing like the Iditarod.
