Peters First Nation facts for kids
The Peters First Nation (also known as the Peters Band) is a group of First Nations people who are part of the larger Stó꞉lō nation. They live in the beautiful area near Hope, British Columbia, in Canada. Like many First Nations, they have their own band government that helps manage their community and traditions.
Their traditional name in the Halkomelem language is Skw'átets. This special name means 'trickling water in the back'. It describes how water used to gently flow under the roots of trees in their traditional lands, especially when waterfalls were active.
The Story Behind Their Name
For a while, the Peters First Nation was known by an English spelling of their traditional name, "Squatits Band." However, this spelling is no longer used today. The community prefers to use their original Halkomelem name, Skw'átets, or the English name Peters First Nation. This helps keep their heritage and language strong.
The Peters First Nation Community
The Peters First Nation is a vibrant community. As of a recent count, there are about 65 members in the band. Being a member of a First Nation means you are part of an Indigenous group in Canada with unique rights, cultures, and histories. The band government works to support its members and preserve their traditions for future generations.
