The Petite rivière Port-Daniel (which means Little River Port-Daniel in English) is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows through the Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine region. This river travels through different areas called regional county municipalities (MRCs).
These areas include:
- The MRC of Bonaventure Regional County Municipality: This covers parts of Rivière-Bonaventure, Saint-Godefroi, and Shigawake.
- The MRC of Le Rocher-Percé Regional County Municipality: This includes the area of Port-Daniel–Gascons.
The Petite rivière Port-Daniel eventually flows into Port-Daniel Bay. This bay is on the north side of Chaleur Bay, which then opens up to the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.
River's Journey
The Petite rivière Port-Daniel starts from small streams high up in the mountains. These streams are found in an area called Honorat, which is part of Rivière-Bonaventure.
The river's source is located on the southern side of a natural dividing line. This means that water on one side of this line flows into the Petite rivière Port-Daniel, while water on the other side flows into different rivers like the Hall River or the rivière Port-Daniel du Milieu. The upper part of the Petite rivière Port-Daniel flows generally alongside the Hall River.
The river's starting point is:
- About 2.1 km (1.3 mi) southwest of the Weir township border.
- About 4.4 km (2.7 mi) north of the Shigawake municipality border.
- About 1.0 km (0.62 mi) southwest of the Le Rocher-Percé Regional County Municipality border.
- About 18.7 km (11.6 mi) northwest of the Route 132 bridge, which is near where the river meets the sea.
From its source, the Petite rivière Port-Daniel flows for about 31.0 km (19.3 mi). It generally moves south, then turns east. Most of its journey is through forests and mountains.
Upper Part of the River
The first part of the river's journey is about 12.4 km (7.7 mi) long.
- It flows south for about 5.3 km (3.3 mi) until it reaches the northern border of Saint-Godefroi.
- It continues south for about 0.8 km (0.50 mi), where it meets the See stream.
- Then, it flows south and east for about 1.9 km (1.2 mi), meeting another stream.
- It turns northeast for about 1.4 km (0.87 mi) until it reaches the border of Shigawake.
- Finally, it flows southeast for about 3.0 km (1.9 mi), curving east, until it meets the Sellette brook.
Lower Part of the River
The second part of the river's journey is about 18.6 km (11.6 mi) long.
- It flows east for about 1.4 km (0.87 mi), meeting a stream from the southwest.
- It continues east for about 0.5 km (0.31 mi), meeting another stream from the north.
- It flows east and then south for about 2.1 km (1.3 mi), meeting a stream from the southwest.
- It moves east for about 1.9 km (1.2 mi) until it reaches the border of Port-Daniel–Gascons.
- It flows east for about 0.7 km (0.43 mi), meeting Rankin Creek.
- It continues east for about 6.1 km (3.8 mi), curving south, until it meets the Portes de l'Enfer stream.
- It flows east for about 1.9 km (1.2 mi), curving south, until it meets the Langlois stream, which flows near the small town of Clemville.
- It flows east for about 1.2 km (0.75 mi), winding a bit, until it meets another stream.
- It continues east for about 2.3 km (1.4 mi) until it reaches the Canadian National railway bridge. This bridge is on the edge of a small body of water called a barachois.
- Finally, it flows east for about 0.5 km (0.31 mi) to the mouth of this small barachois, which is crossed by Route 132.
This small barachois then empties into Port-Daniel Bay, passing under the Route 132 bridge. Port-Daniel Bay opens up to the southeast into Chaleur Bay. Chaleur Bay is about 2.8 km (1.7 mi) wide at its opening and is bordered by "Cap de la Vieille" to the east and "Pointe du Sud-Ouest".
The river's mouth is located north of Port-Daniel-Center village and southwest of Port-Daniel-Est village.
