About the Album's Story
A New Version of a Classic Tale
This album tells the classic 1936 story of Peter and the Wolf in a new way. It's like a myth or legend. The story is told from the point of view of different characters. These include the boy, "Petr," and his "Grandfater."
You also hear from the "Three Wise Hunters" and the animals. The animals are "Cat," "Bird," "Duk," and "Wulf." The song "Scarewulf" acts like an introduction to the album's story. It sets the scene for what's to come.
Munly chose to use the Russian spelling for some of the song titles. This was done to honor Prokofiev's original story. Munly shared that he loved the story since he was a child. He wanted to create his own "true version" of it.
The World of Lupercalia
Petr & The Wulf is also a prequel to a larger story. This story takes place in an imaginary world called Lupercalia. Munly plans to tell this epic story over four albums. The goal is to create a big series called 'The Kinnery of Lupercalia'.
This series is all about the town of Lupercalia and its unique residents. The people living there are described as "families who interact with each other." Lupercalia is an "imagined community" where it's hard to tell who is a god and who is not.
How the Album Was Made
This album is considered the first official release by Munly & The Lupercalians. However, Munly had released five other studio albums before this one.
The album was recorded, mixed, and produced by Bob Ferbrache. This work happened at Absinthe Studios in Denver, Colorado.
Album Releases and Special Editions
CD and Vinyl Editions
The album has a special category number from Alternative Tentacles, which is VIRUS 421. The vinyl version was first made by Rainbo Records. It included unique artwork and a "Pre-History of Lupercalia." This was a special story about the world of Lupercalia.
Around 2015, the band re-released the album. They did this through their own record label, SCAC Unincorporated.
Special Lyric Booklets
In October 2019, Munly and band member Rebecca Vera worked together. They created special lyric booklets for the album. Munly wrote the lyrics by hand, and Vera made the artwork. These booklets also included the "Pre-History of Lupercalia." Only 32 copies were made, making them very rare!
Other Places to Hear the Music
The song "Grandfater" appeared on two other albums. It was on Radio 1190: Local Shakedown, Vol. 3 in 2009. It also appeared on Rodentagogue: The Best of Dark Roots Music Volume II in 2010.
