Petrissa Solja (born March 11, 1994) is a German table tennis player who has now retired. She won a silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. This was for the team event. In March 2016, she reached her highest world ranking, which was 13th.

About Petrissa Solja

Petrissa Solja was born in Kandel, Germany. She grew up in a family that loved table tennis. Her mother, Dagmar Solja-Andruszko, played table tennis for a club. Petrissa also has two older sisters who play the sport. One of her sisters, Amelie, played for Austria in the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Petrissa's Table Tennis Journey

Petrissa Solja's father, Pavel, is her coach. She plays table tennis using her left hand. She uses a special way of holding the paddle called a shakehand grip.

Early Success as a Junior Player

As a young player, Petrissa was very successful. She won the Cadet singles events at the European Youth Championships. This happened in both 2008 and 2009. She beat Bernadette Szőcs and Yana Noskova in those final games.

In 2011 and 2012, she reached the Junior singles finals. She lost to Bernadette Szőcs both times. Still, she was the best European player at the World Junior Championships in 2012. She made it to the semi-finals in the girls' singles. Overall, she won three bronze medals there. In 2012, Petrissa Solja was named the German young player of the year.

Winning German National Titles

Petrissa teamed up with Sabine Winter. Together, they won the German national doubles championship. They won this title in both 2013 and 2014.

Olympic Medal and World Championships

At the 2016 Summer Olympics, Petrissa Solja won a silver medal. This was in the women's team competition. She and her partner, Han Ying, played against the Chinese team. They lost the match 0 to 3. This silver medal was the best result for a European women's team at the Olympics. It was a big surprise because her team was expected to finish third. In the women's singles, Petrissa lost in the third round. She played against Ri Myong-sun from North Korea.

In 2017, Petrissa Solja won a bronze medal. She teamed up with Fang Bo for mixed doubles. This happened at the 2017 World Table Tennis Championships in Düsseldorf, Germany. It was the first World Championship medal in mixed doubles for Germany since 1971. Later in 2017, Petrissa played in a new league in India. It was called the Ultimate Table Tennis League.

Club Play and Comeback

Petrissa played for a German club called TTC Berlin Eastside starting in 2014. She then took a break from table tennis at the end of 2017. In 2018, she signed with a new club, TSV Langstadt.

In 2019, Petrissa Solja made a great comeback. She won a gold medal at the ITTF-Europe Top 16 event. She was losing by 3 games but managed to win against Bernadette Szőcs.
