Petrus Johannes Truter (born December 17, 1747, in Cape Town; died January 31, 1825, in Swellendam, Overberg) was an important person in early South Africa. He was an explorer and worked for the East India Company. He also served as a judge in the Court of Justice and as a police commissioner.

Petrus Johannes Truter was born in Cape Town. He was one of 14 children in his family. His parents were Jan Andries Truter and Maria Kuypermann.

Family Life

On April 18, 1773, Petrus Johannes Truter married Johanna Ernestina Blankenberg. They had seven children together. One of their daughters, Anna Maria Truter, later married a famous explorer and writer named Sir John Barrow, 1st Baronet.

Truter's Important Expedition

In 1801, P.J. Truter helped lead a big journey known as the Truter-Somerville Expedition. He led this trip with William Somerville, who was a doctor.

Who Joined the Expedition?

Many interesting people joined them on this expedition. One was John Barrow, who would later become Truter's son-in-law. Another was Samuel Daniell, a talented artist who drew many pictures of what they saw. Two missionaries, Jan Matthys Kok and William Edwards, also came along. This journey helped them explore new parts of the country.
