Samuel Daniell (born 1775 – died 16 December 1811) was an English artist. He was famous for painting scenes of nature and animals, especially from Africa and Sri Lanka (which was then called Ceylon). He first traveled to South Africa in 1799.

Samuel Daniell's Life and Art

Samuel Daniell was born in a town called Chertsey in England. He became well-known as an artist who joined an important trip to South Africa between 1799 and 1802. On this trip, he drew many amazing pictures of African animals and landscapes.

Exploring Southern Africa

In December 1799, Samuel Daniell arrived in South Africa. He was the official artist and secretary for a special journey that went from the Cape of Good Hope all the way to Bechuanaland (which is now Botswana). During this trip, he created many drawings of the places he saw and the animals he met.

When he returned to England, Samuel worked with his brothers, William Daniell and Thomas Daniell. Together, they published a book in 1804 called African Scenery and Animals. This book shared his beautiful artworks with the world.

Art from Ceylon

Later, Samuel Daniell moved to Sri Lanka, which was known as Ceylon at the time. He lived there from 1806 until 1811, when he sadly passed away from a tropical fever.

After he died, his brother William published more of Samuel's drawings in 1806. This collection was titled A Picturesque Illustration of the Scenery, Animals and Native Inhabitants of Ceylon.

Art Published After His Death

Even after Samuel Daniell passed away, his artworks continued to be shared. In 1820, many of his drawings were turned into special prints called lithographs. These were published in a book called Sketches Representing the Native Tribes and Scenery of Southern Africa.

Then, in 1832, another collection of his art was released. It was called Twenty Varied Subjects of the Tribe of Antelopes, showing his detailed drawings of different kinds of antelopes.
