Pettisville was first planned out in 1857. It was likely named after a man named Mr. Pettis. He was a contractor who worked on railroads. In the same year, a post office was opened in Pettisville. This allowed people to send and receive mail.

Pettisville is in the southwestern part of Fulton County. Part of the community is in Clinton Township, and the other part is in German Township.
If you travel north on County Road 19 for about 0.8 miles, you will reach Ohio State Route 2. This route goes east for about 5 miles to Wauseon. Wauseon is the main town and county seat of Fulton County. If you go west from Pettisville on County Road D for about 5 miles, you will reach Archbold.
