Pettysville got its name from a store owner named Daniel Petty. He was the one who planned out the community in 1872. This happened when the Vandalia Railroad was built and reached this area.

A post office was opened in Pettysville in 1875. This was a place where people could send and receive mail. The post office served the community for many years. However, it closed down in 1917.
