Pettytown is a small, unincorporated community in Texas, USA. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Pettytown is located across two different counties: Bastrop County and Caldwell County. It's part of the larger Greater Austin area. We don't have recent numbers for how many people live there.
A Look at Pettytown's History
Pettytown was founded around 1850. A family named John and Elizabeth Petty, along with their 14 children and other relatives, started the community. They were the first settlers in this area.
Where is Pettytown Located?
Pettytown is situated about four miles south of another place called Red Rock. It sits right on the border between Caldwell County and Bastrop County. Back in 1940, maps showed only a few scattered houses in the community. By the 1980s, the main thing marked on maps for Pettytown was just a cemetery.
Schools in Pettytown
Education has always been important in Pettytown. In 1905, the community had its own school. It had one teacher and taught 42 students. This school was still on county maps in 1940.
However, in 1949, the Pettytown school joined with the Red Rock school district. Today, students in Pettytown attend different schools depending on which county they live in. If they are in Caldwell County, they go to schools in the Lockhart Independent School District. If they are in Bastrop County, they attend schools in the Bastrop Independent School District.
Around 1910, Pettytown was also its own school district, known as SD #37 Pettytown. It was even used as a place where people could go to vote in Bastrop County.
