History

Phap Hoa Temple began in 1978. It started in a small house at 83 Addison Road in Rosewater, South Australia. A group of Vietnamese immigrants created it. They wanted a place for Vietnamese Buddhists to practice their faith.

The Most Venerable Thich Nhu Hue was invited to come from Japan. He came to lead the temple. The first house was too small for everyone. So, they looked for a bigger piece of land.

Building the new temple started on March 19, 1984. It was built on a large area of land. The main hall of the temple opened on December 23, 1989.

On June 26, 2003, the main hall was badly damaged. Someone broke many statues and decorations inside. This meant that many statues had to be replaced.

After the damage, the temple was repaired. A new statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva was placed in the courtyard. A new "Three Entrance Fence" was also added. The repaired hall was shown in a special ceremony. This happened on June 27, 2004. Important people like South Australian Premier Mike Rann and Opposition leader Rob Kerin were there.
