Phan Văn Khải (born December 25, 1933 – died March 17, 2018) was an important Vietnamese leader. He served as the fifth Prime Minister of Vietnam from 1997 until 2006. People saw him as a smart and kind leader who helped Vietnam's economy grow.

Early Life and Education
Phan Văn Khải was born on December 25, 1933. His birthplace was Tan Thong Hoi Commune in Củ Chi District, which was then part of Saigon in French Indochina. Even when he was young, he was involved in groups working for change.
After the first Indochina War ended, Vietnam was divided. Phan Văn Khải moved to North Vietnam. He joined the revolution in 1947. On July 15, 1959, he became a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
From 1954 to 1959, he studied land reform in North Vietnam. Later, he went to the University of Economics in Moscow, Soviet Union. He studied languages there until 1965.
Becoming Prime Minister
After the war, Phan Văn Khải worked as the mayor of Ho Chi Minh City for a time. He then became the Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. His term as Prime Minister lasted from September 24, 1997, to June 24, 2006.
During his time as Prime Minister, he made history. He was the first Vietnamese Prime Minister to visit the United States. There, he met with President George W. Bush. On June 24, 2006, he announced he would step down. President Trần Đức Lương also resigned at the same time.
Leading ASEAN
From December 15, 1998, to November 5, 2001, Phan Văn Khải had another important role. He was the chairman of ASEAN. This is a group of countries in Southeast Asia that work together.
Phan Văn Khải was known as a leader who wanted to make changes. He helped open up Vietnam's economy to the world. He passed away on March 17, 2018, at his home in Ho Chi Minh City.
Family Life
Phan Văn Khải was married to Nguyễn Thị Sáu. She used to be a deputy director for planning and investment in Ho Chi Minh City. She passed away in 2012. Phan Văn Khải had a son named Phan Minh Hoan and a daughter named Phan Thi Bach Yen.
