Trần Đức Lương (born May 5, 1937 – died May 20, 2025) was a very important Vietnamese politician. He served as the sixth President of Vietnam from 1997 to 2006.

Early Life and Education
Trần Đức Lương was born in Đức Phổ District, which is in Quảng Ngãi Province. After finishing high school in 1954, he moved to Hanoi. He then studied geology at Hanoi University of Mining and Geology.
Political Career
Lương joined the Communist Party of Vietnam in 1959. By the 1970s, he became an official within the party. In 1987, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam.
He became a member of the Politburo in June 1996. On September 24, 1997, Trần Đức Lương was chosen to be the state president of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. He was re-elected for this role in 2002.
On June 24, 2006, Lương announced that he was stepping down from his position. The Prime Minister, Phan Văn Khải, also resigned at the same time. Nguyễn Minh Triết then became the new president, taking over from Lương.
Family Life
Trần Đức Lương had a son named Trần Tuấn Anh. His son was also involved in politics, leading the Communist Party of Vietnam's Central Economic Committee before he resigned in 2024.
Later Years and Passing
Trần Đức Lương passed away at his home on May 20, 2025. He was 88 years old. State media reported that he died due to old age and a serious illness. A state funeral was held for him on May 24 and 25. Lương was buried in his hometown in Đức Phổ District, Quảng Ngãi Province, on May 25.
