Nguyễn Minh Triết (born 8 October 1942) is a Vietnamese politician. He was the seventh President of Vietnam from 2006 to 2011. He was chosen by the National Assembly of Vietnam in June 2006. He received 464 votes, which was 94% of all votes.
Before becoming president, Nguyễn Minh Triết was a leader of the Communist Party of Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City. In Vietnam, the president's role is mostly ceremonial. The main government decisions are made by the Politburo. From 2006 to 2011, Triết was the fourth-highest member of the Politburo. His time as president ended in July 2011. After him, Trương Tấn Sang became president.
At a big meeting of the Communist Party in April 2006, he was suggested to be the next President. The National Assembly confirmed him on 27 June 2006. On that day, he took over from Trần Đức Lương. He then suggested Nguyễn Tấn Dũng to be the new prime minister.

Early Life and Career
Nguyễn Minh Triết was born on 8 October 1942. His family were farmers in Bến Cát district, Bình Dương province. In 1957, he moved to Saigon to study at Petrus Ky High School. This was a top high school in the south.
Joining the Movement
In 1960, Triết studied Mathematics at the University of Saigon. During this time, he started to join student groups. These groups were against the government of Ngo Dinh Diem. In 1965, he became a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam. This was during the Vietnam War, which involved the United States.
Triết is one of the few top leaders from Southern Vietnam. He did not move to the North when the country was divided in 1954. He was only 12 years old then. In 1992, he became the party leader of Sông Bé Province. He helped this farming province become a place that attracted money from other countries.
Working for the Youth Union
In November 1963, Nguyễn Minh Triết went to a war zone. He worked as an accountant and researcher for a youth organization. In March 1965, he joined the Southern Revolutionary People's Party. He used the secret names Trần Phong and Sáu Phong. He became a secretary for the Youth Union. He worked in Mỹ Tho Province until 1973.
From 1974 to 1979, he was a deputy leader of the Central Youth Union. In 1979, he studied Political Science and graduated in 1981. After that, he held many important roles in the Youth Union. He became a vice chairman and general secretary of Vietnam’s Youth Union.
Leading in Ho Chi Minh City
In 1997, he joined the Politburo. This is a very important group in the Communist Party. In 2000, he became the Party leader of Ho Chi Minh City. In this role, he led efforts against organized crime and corruption.
Leadership in Southern Vietnam
From 1988 to 1991, Nguyễn Minh Triết was a leader in Sông Bé province. From 1989 to 1991, he was a deputy secretary for Bình Dương and Bình Phước provinces. These areas, along with Ho Chi Minh City, grew very fast during this time. They attracted a lot of money from foreign investors.
In June 1991, he was chosen to be part of the Central Committee of the Communist Party. In December 1991, he became the Secretary of Sông Bé Provincial Party Committee. He held this job until 1996. In July 1992, he was elected to the National Assembly.
Joining the Politburo
In January 1997, Nguyễn Minh Triết became the Deputy Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee. In December of the same year, he joined the Politburo. He was put in charge of the Central Mobilization Committee.
In January 2000, Nguyễn Minh Triết became the Party Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City. In April 2001, he was re-elected to the Central Party Committee and the Politburo. In May 2002, he was again elected to the National Assembly, representing Ho Chi Minh City. In April 2006, he was re-elected to the Politburo.
Becoming President and Key Activities
On 27 June 2006, Nguyễn Minh Triết was elected as the president of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The National Assembly voted for him. He received 464 votes, which was 94.12% of the votes. This made him the new president.
Visiting the United States
In June 2007, President Triết visited the United States. President George W. Bush invited him. During his trip, Nguyễn Minh Triết met about 800 business people in Orange County, California. Many of them were Vietnamese Americans. He spoke about Vietnamese people and national unity. He also said that the Vietnamese government did not treat people with different views unfairly.
However, about two thousand Vietnamese Americans protested. They believed the Vietnamese government did not respect human rights. Despite this, his calm and smart answers were seen as changing many old ideas that US Congressmen had. He especially answered questions from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
