Nguyễn Minh Triết (born 8 October 1942) is a Vietnamese politician. He served as the seventh President of Vietnam from 2006 to 2011. He was chosen by the National Assembly of Vietnam in June 2006.
Before becoming president, Nguyễn Minh Triết was a leader of the Communist Party of Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City. In Vietnam, the president's role is mostly ceremonial. This means the president represents the country but the main government policies are decided by the Politburo. Nguyễn Minh Triết was a high-ranking member of the Politburo during his presidency. His time as president ended in July 2011. Another senior Politburo member, Trương Tấn Sang, took over from him.

Early Life and Education
Nguyễn Minh Triết was born on October 8, 1942. His family were farmers in Bến Cát district, Bình Dương province. In 1957, he moved to Saigon to study at Petrus Ky High School. This was a very important high school in southern Vietnam.
In 1960, Triết studied Mathematics at the University of Saigon. During this time, he started to join student groups. These groups were against the government of Ngo Dinh Diem.
Joining the Communist Party
In 1965, Nguyễn Minh Triết became a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam. This was during the Vietnam War, which involved the United States. He was one of the few top leaders from southern Vietnam who did not move to the North when the country was divided in 1954. He was only 12 years old then.
In November 1963, he worked in a war zone near Saigon. He was an accountant and researcher for a youth organization. In 1965, he joined the Southern Revolutionary People's Party. He used the secret names Trần Phong and Sáu Phong. He worked with youth groups in Mỹ Tho Province until 1973.
From 1974 to 1979, he was a deputy leader of the Central Youth Union. In 1979, he went to study at the Nguyễn Ái Quốc Party School. He earned a degree in Political Science in 1981. After that, he held several important roles in youth organizations. He was also a leader of the Central Party Committee of the Union in Ho Chi Minh City.
Leadership Roles in Southern Vietnam
In 1992, Nguyễn Minh Triết became the party chief of Sông Bé Province in southern Vietnam. He helped this farming province become a place that attracted a lot of foreign direct investment. This means businesses from other countries invested money there.
From 1988 to 1991, he was a leader in the Sông Bé Provincial Party Committee. This area, including Bình Dương and Ho Chi Minh City, grew very fast. In 1991, he was chosen to be part of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam. He was re-elected to this committee in 1996.
In 1997, Nguyễn Minh Triết became a deputy leader of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee. Later that year, he joined the Politburo. This is a very powerful group that makes important decisions for the country. In January 2000, he became the main Party Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City. In this role, he led efforts to fight against organized crime and corruption.
Becoming President
On June 27, 2006, Nguyễn Minh Triết was elected as the president of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The National Assembly chose him with a large number of votes. He officially became the new president with 94.12% of the votes. He then suggested Nguyễn Tấn Dũng to be the new prime minister.
In June 2007, as president, he visited the United States. He was invited by President George W. Bush. During his trip, Nguyễn Minh Triết met with many business people. He spoke about the unity of the Vietnamese people. He also mentioned that the Vietnamese government was fair to people with different ideas. He was seen as someone who could answer difficult questions calmly and cleverly.
