Nguyễn Thị Doan is an important Vietnamese leader, a former teacher, and a politician. She served as the Vice President of Vietnam from 2007 to 2016. She was also a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam's main leadership group, called the Central Committee. She represented Hà Nam Province in the National Assembly of Vietnam, which is like the country's parliament.
Nguyễn Thị Doan was once a university professor who taught economics. Her country's National Assembly chose her to be the Vice President. She held this high position for nine years.

Early Life and Education
Where Was She Born?
Nguyễn Thị Doan was born on November 1, 1951. Her birthplace was in the northern part of Vietnam, in a place called Hà Nam Province.
Her Journey in Learning
In 1977, she started studying economics at Hanoi University of Commerce. She finished her degree in 1979. Right after graduating, she began working as a lecturer, which is like a teacher, at the same university.
She continued her studies abroad to earn advanced degrees. She went to Bulgaria to get a PhD in economics. She also studied in France for a PhD in business administration.
Joining the Communist Party
In 1982, Nguyễn Thị Doan became a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam. This is the main political party in Vietnam.
Leading a University
After returning to Vietnam, she was chosen to be the Rector of Hanoi University of Commerce. A Rector is the head of a university, similar to a president or principal.
Political Career and Leadership
Rising in the Party
Nguyễn Thị Doan became a key figure in the Communist Party. In June 1996, she was elected to the Party's Central Committee. This committee is a very important group that helps guide the country. Three years later, she joined the Central Committee's Supervisory Commission. This group helps make sure rules are followed.
She was re-elected to the Central Committee two more times. She also served as the Permanent Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Commission. This means she was a senior leader in that important group.
Becoming Vice President
On July 25, 2007, Nguyễn Thị Doan was named the Vice President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. This happened during a meeting of the Twelfth National Assembly. As Vice President, she helped the President lead the country. She served in this role until April 8, 2016.
Current Role
As of July 2025, Nguyễn Thị Doan is the Chairwoman of the Vietnam Association for Promoting Education. This organization works to support and encourage education across Vietnam.
