Đặng Thị Ngọc Thịnh was born on December 25, 1959. She is a Vietnamese politician. She made history by becoming the first woman to serve as the acting president of Vietnam in 2018.
She also served as the 16th vice president of Vietnam from 2016 to 2021. Her role as acting president made her the first female head of state in a communist country since Soong Ching-ling of China.

Early Career and Rise to Power
Before working in national politics, Đặng Thị Ngọc Thịnh worked in the government offices of Ho Chi Minh City. She later became the leader of the Vĩnh Long Provincial Party Committee in 2010. This made her the main leader of that province.
She was also a member of the National Assembly for two terms. The National Assembly is like the parliament or congress in other countries. It is where laws are made for Vietnam. She joined the Communist Party of Vietnam on November 19, 1979.
Becoming Vice President
On April 8, 2016, Đặng Thị Ngọc Thịnh was elected as the vice president of Vietnam. She received a large number of votes from the National Assembly. It had become common for a woman to hold this important position.
Serving as Acting President
In 2018, the President of Vietnam, Trần Đại Quang, sadly passed away. Because of this, Đặng Thị Ngọc Thịnh became the acting president on September 21, 2018. She held this important role until a new president, Nguyễn Phú Trọng, was elected and officially took office on October 23, 2018.
Promoting Equality
Throughout her career, Đặng Thị Ngọc Thịnh worked to make things fairer for everyone. She focused on promoting gender equality. This means making sure that women and men have the same opportunities and rights.
She also worked on women's empowerment. This involved helping women become stronger and more involved in all parts of life. This included their roles in the economy, politics, culture, and society.
Retirement from Politics
In January 2021, there was a big meeting called the 13th National Party Congress. Đặng Thị Ngọc Thịnh was not chosen to be part of the new Party Central Committee. She officially retired from politics in April 2021.
