Đặng Thị Ngọc Thịnh (born December 25, 1959) is a Vietnamese politician. She made history by becoming the first woman to serve as the acting president of Vietnam in 2018. She was also the 16th Vice President of Vietnam from 2016 to 2021.
She is the first woman in Vietnam's history to hold the country's top leadership role. She was also the first female head of state in a communist country since Soong Ching-ling of China.

Her Early Life and Career
Đặng Thị Ngọc Thịnh was born in Duy Trinh, a place in Quảng Nam, which is now part of Vietnam. She joined the Communist Party of Vietnam on November 19, 1979. This party is the main political party in Vietnam.
Before working in national politics, she held important jobs in Ho Chi Minh City. This is a very large city in Vietnam. Later, she became the leader of the Vĩnh Long Provincial Party Committee in 2010. This made her the main leader of that province.
She was also a member of the National Assembly for two terms. The National Assembly is like Vietnam's parliament, where laws are made.
Becoming Vice President
On April 8, 2016, Đặng Thị Ngọc Thịnh was elected as the Vice President of Vietnam. She won with a large number of votes, getting 91.09% from the National Assembly. It has become common for a woman to hold this important position in Vietnam.
Acting President of Vietnam
In 2018, the President of Vietnam, Trần Đại Quang, sadly passed away. Because of this, Đặng Thị Ngọc Thịnh became the acting president on September 21, 2018. She held this role until a new president, Nguyễn Phú Trọng, was elected and sworn in on October 23, 2018.
Helping Women and Girls
A big part of Đặng Thị Ngọc Thịnh's work focused on making things fair for everyone. She worked to promote gender equality. This means making sure that women and men have the same rights and opportunities.
She also worked on women's empowerment. This means helping women become stronger and more confident. She wanted to strengthen their role in all parts of life. This included their economic, political, cultural, and social lives.
Retirement
In January 2021, there was a big meeting called the 13th National Party Congress. Đặng Thị Ngọc Thịnh was not chosen to be part of the new Party Central Committee. She officially retired from politics in April 2021.
