The Vice President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is a very important leader in Vietnam. This person is like a helper to the President. They are the second-highest leader in the country.
The President suggests who should be the Vice President. Then, the National Assembly, which is like Vietnam's parliament, must approve this choice. The Vice President's main job is to help the President with their duties. Sometimes, the President might ask the Vice President to take over some tasks.
If the President cannot do their job, the Vice President steps in as the acting President. This means they do the President's work for a short time. For example, Võ Thị Ánh Xuân has been an acting President. If the President's position becomes empty, the Vice President acts as President until the National Assembly chooses a new one.

History of the Vice President Role
The idea of a Vice President in Vietnam first appeared in the country's constitution in 1946. However, the first person to officially hold the title of Vice President was Tôn Đức Thắng in 1960.
Changes to the Title
In 1980, the name of the role changed. It became the "Deputy Chairman of the Council of State." During this time, the constitution did not clearly state what powers this role had. For instance, it did not say if the Deputy Chairman would become acting head of state if the main leader could not serve.
In 1992, the name changed back to "Vice President." Since then, the role of Vice President has often been held by a woman. Two women who held this role have also served as acting President in recent years.
