The Vice President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is an important leader in Vietnam. This person is like the second-in-command to the President. Their main job is to help the President with their duties.
Sometimes, the President might ask the Vice President to take over some tasks. If the President cannot do their job, the Vice President steps in as the acting President. This means they temporarily do the President's work. Several people, like Tôn Đức Thắng and Võ Thị Ánh Xuân, have been acting Presidents for a short time. If the President's position becomes empty, the Vice President acts as President until a new one is chosen by the National Assembly.
The Vice President is chosen by the National Assembly. This happens after the President suggests who should take the role. The President can also suggest that the Vice President be removed from office or resign. The National Assembly must approve these suggestions.

History of the Vice President Role
The idea of a Vice President was first mentioned in Vietnam's constitution in 1946. However, the first person to actually become Vice President was Tôn Đức Thắng in 1960.
Changes to the Title
In 1980, the name of the office changed. It became the Deputy Chairman of the Council of State. The 1980 constitution was a bit different. It did not clearly say what powers the Deputy Chairman had. For example, it didn't mention if they would become acting head of state if the main leader couldn't do their job.
In 1992, the name changed back to Vice President. Since then, it has been common for a woman to hold this important position. Two women have even become acting President in recent years.
