Võ Thị Ánh Xuân (born on January 8, 1970) is a well-known Vietnamese politician. She used to be a teacher before entering politics. Since 2021, she has served as the 17th vice president of Vietnam. She also briefly held the role of acting president of Vietnam in 2023 and again in 2024.
She was chosen as the Vice President on April 6, 2021. She received a lot of support, with 93.13% of the votes in the National Assembly. This continued a trend of women holding this important position. Before becoming Vice President, Ms. Xuân was the leader of the Communist Party in An Giang province. She also led the province's group of representatives in the National Assembly. She is a member of the Party Central Committee, which is a very important group in the Communist Party of Vietnam. She is the second woman to serve as acting president, following Đặng Thị Ngọc Thịnh in 2018. Võ Thị Ánh Xuân was also the youngest Vice President of Vietnam since 1945.

Early Life and Education
Võ Thị Ánh Xuân was born on January 8, 1970. Her birthplace was Thới Sơn, a part of Tịnh Biên in An Giang province, Vietnam. She began her career as a high school teacher. From 1992 to 1996, she taught in Long Xuyên, which is also in An Giang Province. She officially joined the Communist Party of Vietnam on December 20, 1995.

Early Roles in An Giang
From 1996 to 2001, she worked as a researcher for the An Giang Provincial Party Committee. After that, from 2001 to 2010, she was a leader in the An Giang Women's Union. She started as Vice Chairwoman and later became Chairwoman. During this time, she also became a member of the An Giang Provincial Party Organisation Committee.
Rising Through the Ranks
From 2010 to 2013, Ms. Xuân was a key member of the An Giang Provincial Party Committee. She served as the Secretary of the Tan Chau Town Party Committee. In January 2011, she was chosen as an alternate member of the Party Central Committee. This committee is a very important group in the Communist Party.
Later, from 2013 to 2015, she became the Vice Secretary of the An Giang Provincial Party Committee. On October 2, 2015, she was promoted to Secretary of the An Giang Provincial Party Committee. She held this top position in the province for several years.
National Assembly and Vice Presidency
In January 2016, she was elected as a full member of the 12th Party Central Committee. After the national election, she also became the head of the An Giang delegation to the National Assembly.
On April 6, 2021, the National Assembly of Vietnam voted to elect Võ Thị Ánh Xuân as the Vice President. She received strong support from the deputies. At that time, she was the youngest Vice President of Vietnam since 1945.
International Engagements
As Vice President, Ms. Xuân has represented Vietnam on the global stage. On June 30, 2022, she attended the inauguration of Philippine President Bongbong Marcos. She also visited Kazakhstan on October 13, 2022. There, she participated in a major conference focused on cooperation in Asia.
Serving as Acting President
Võ Thị Ánh Xuân has twice taken on the important role of Acting President of Vietnam.
First Time as Acting President
On January 18, 2023, the then-President, Nguyễn Xuân Phúc, stepped down from his duties. According to Vietnam's Constitution, Ms. Xuân became the Acting President. She officially took over the responsibilities on February 4, 2023. During this period, she oversaw important tasks, such as appointing new Vietnamese ambassadors. On March 2, 2023, she returned to her role as Vice President after Võ Văn Thưởng was elected as the new President.
Second Time as Acting President
On March 20, 2024, President Võ Văn Thưởng resigned from his positions. For the second time, Võ Thị Ánh Xuân became the Acting President of Vietnam. This was a unique event, as she became the first woman to serve as Acting President twice during the same term of the Party Central Committee. She held this role until a new President was elected by the National Assembly.
Activities After Acting President
After her first time as Acting President, Ms. Xuân continued her duties as Vice President. From May 3 to May 8, 2023, she attended the Global Women's Summit in the United Arab Emirates. She also visited Qatar during this trip. On August 14, 2023, she attended a ceremony for a new school building project. This project, which she helped to organize funding for, provided new classrooms for students.
