Phillip Krokidis (born May 6, 1969 – died November 1, 2020), known as Phil K, was a famous Australian electronic music DJ and producer. He came from Melbourne, Australia. Phil K was a key part of the "Aussie breaks" music scene. This group included other DJs like Nubreed and Andy Page.

Besides being a DJ, Phil K also made music with others. He worked with Habersham and Dave Preston in a group called The Operators. He was also a member of Hi-Fi Bugs and Lostep. Phil K was best known for playing breakbeat music. However, he also mixed in other styles. These included ambient, deep house, and techno music. He liked to explore different sounds and not stick to just one type of music.

Phil K's Journey in Music

Phil K started his journey as a DJ in 1985. His first performances were at his school's disco parties. Soon after, he began working for a company that rented out disco equipment. He helped set up sound systems at different places.

In the 1990s, Phil K worked for DMC. This company sold DJ equipment and records. In 1996, Phil K released his first record. It was called "Summer Breeze." He made it with Andy Page and Ivan Gough as a group called Free Radicals.

In 1998, Phil K helped start a new record label. It was called Zero Tolerance Records. He started it with Andy Page. They used this label to release music from their duo, Hi-Fi Bugs. Zero Tolerance Records released electronic music from 1998 to 2004. They put out songs by artists like Ivan Gough and Luke Chable.

Awards and Collaborations

In 2000, Phil K created his first official mix album. It was for Global Recordings. This album won him the "Best Dance Compilation" award in 2001. His radio show, "Friday Tapes" on Kiss 100, also won an award. It was named "Best Radio Show."

Phil K began working with another Australian DJ, Luke Chable. In 2002, they released a song called "The Roots." Later, they sent a demo of their next song, "Burma," to the famous DJ Sasha. Sasha liked it so much that he put it on his album Involver. The song was also released by GU Music.

Phil K also mixed the fourth album in the Balance series. This album, Balance 004, had two discs. One was a "Breaks Mix" and the other a "House Mix." This work earned Phil K another award in 2003. He won the "Best Mix CD" award.

In 2005, Distinct'ive Breaks Records released Phil K's album for the Y4k series. This album mixed melodic breaks, bassy techno, and glitchy electro. It also featured "Cloudbrake." This was a strong breakbeat song Phil K wrote with Habersham. In 2006, Phil K and Chable, as Lostep, released their album Because We Can. This album combined emotional breakbeats and electro rhythms. It also used unique synth sounds and samples.

Phil K passed away on November 1, 2020. He was 51 years old and died from prostate cancer.

How Technology Changed Music

Phil K worked with Pioneer to create something new. They developed a test version of the DVJ-X1. This was the first mixer that could mix both visuals and audio live.

Unlike some other DJs, Phil K was open to new technology. He didn't think that vinyl records were the only way to play music. He enjoyed using newer digital tools. He liked them because they offered more flexibility and ways to be creative.
