Phil May (born Philip Wadey, later Kattner; 9 November 1944 – 15 May 2020) was an English singer. He became famous in the 1960s as the lead singer of the band Pretty Things. Phil May was a founding member of the band and stayed with them for many years. He also wrote many of the band's song lyrics, especially for their album S.F. Sorrow.

Early Life and Name Changes

Phil May was born Philip Wadey in Dartford, Kent. He was raised by his aunt and uncle, whose last name was May. Later, he lived with his mother and stepfather, whose last name was Kattner. However, he later decided to use the name May again.

Starting The Pretty Things Band

In 1963, Phil May helped create the band The Pretty Things. He formed the group at Sidcup Art College with guitarist Dick Taylor. Dick Taylor had recently left another famous band, The Rolling Stones.

With Phil May as the lead singer, The Pretty Things became a part of the British blues rock music scene. They quickly got a record deal and became popular. The band had several hit songs, including "Don't Bring Me Down", which reached the top ten in the UK.

The S.F. Sorrow Album

In 1968, The Pretty Things released their album S.F. Sorrow. This album is known as one of the first rock opera albums. A rock opera tells a story through its songs. The songs and lyrics for S.F. Sorrow were based on stories written by Phil May. He often wrote these stories while the band was recording the album.

At first, the album was not a big success. But over time, it became a favorite among many music fans. Phil May continued to be a member of The Pretty Things until they stopped performing in 2018. Their final concert included special guests like David Gilmour and Van Morrison.

Other Music Projects

In 1976, Phil May worked on a new music project with a group called the Fallen Angels. They planned to record an album. However, after recording only a few songs, most of the other musicians left the project. Phil May then brought in new musicians to finish the album, which was called Phil May and the Fallen Angels. This album was mainly released in the Netherlands.

Phil May's Passing

Phil May passed away on 15 May 2020, at the age of 75. He died in a hospital in King's Lynn due to problems after hip surgery. This surgery was needed after he had a cycling accident. He is remembered by his partner and his two children.
